Let’s be honest – with all the talk about credits, rebates and STCs, installing a solar energy system can be a confusing process.
At Redfern Power Solutions, we believe in demystifying information around solar energy. There is enough going on in this world – we can make solar installation simple!
We believe anyone installing a solar system should be empowered with all the information. There are a lot of misconceptions out there – we are on a mission to change this.
So we have put together some of the common questions we are asked – and provided the answers.
How do Solar Rebates work?
If you are looking to install a solar energy system in your house or small business, you may be able to receive a benefit under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)..
If you install an eligible system, you will be given Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). These can be redeemed for a dollar value that is deducted from the cost of the solar system.
STCs can be redeemed by selling or assigning them.
We have a system to help our customers avoid having to do this.
When you purchase a system from Redfern Power Solutions, we take over this process for you. As an authorised seller, we can register and sell the STCs on the market.
How this works is, when we install your system, you assign the STCs over to us.
We then handle the registration of these certificates with the Renewable Energy Regulator on your behalf – and we eventually recover their value. This means you will see an immediate deduction in cost.
If you wish to, you can sell the rebate personally. In order to do this, you will have to register – and go through rigmarole to become an authorised seller, which takes approximately six weeks.
How is the solar rebate calculated?
The number of STCs you will receive are calculated by:
The area you live x the size of the system you install x the amount of time until the trading scheme ends. (Which is 2030.)
You can use this calculator to see how many credits you will receive for the rebate.
What are they worth?
The value of an STC at any one time depends on market conditions – as well as the factors above.
How are Solar Credits different?
Alongside the Solar Rebate, if you install any solar system, you will also receive credits from your energy supplier.
This comes in the form of credit on your power bill for generation.
The amount you will get for this completely depends on which energy retailer you are with.
In terms of how you claim this, it is automatically worked into your power bill.
Who is the best energy retailer for Solar?
We get this a lot – it’s a valid question!
Unfortunately – we don’t have a hot tip here, as this changes all the time. There are always different deals out there. So from one week to the next, the choice on which is the best energy retailer to go with is different.
How do I get started?
The first step is to get a quote.
We can assess the site and discuss your power needs, to ensure you get the right system. We can give you a quote about what you’re looking at in terms of cost and tell you the best way to proceed.
So if you’ve been thinking about installing a solar system for a while, but you’re not sure where to start – give us a call.
We can answer any questions you have – and you can rest easy knowing the systems we install are the best quality.
